How to Call the Adhan

The Adhan is a very special Islamic call to salat (prayer). The one who recites it is called a Mu'azzin. It is also the first thing that is being recited to the Muslim baby's ear as an Islamic custom. Adhan is called before every prayer to let people know the prayer is going to start soon. When it is heard, people must stop working on their tasks and get prepared for prayer. The Iqama is called right before the Imam starts the Salat.


Steps

  1. Perform Wudu.
  2. Face the Qiblah.
  3. Make the intention. or the niyyah to call the Adhan.
  4. Optionally, place your index finger in your ears.Recite the following slowly, in a loud and clear voice:
  • Allaahu Akbar (2x)"God is the greatest"
  • Allaahu Akbar (2x)"God is the greatest"
  • Ashhadu Allah ilaaha illa-Lah"I bear witness that there none worthy of worship except God"
  • Ashhadu Allah ilaaha illa-Lah"I bear witness that there none worthy of worship except God"
  • Ash Hadu anna Muhamadar rasuulullah"I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God"
  • Ash Hadu anna Muhamadar rasuulullah"I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God"
  • <Hayya' alas Salaah"Come to prayer"
  • Hayya' alas Salaah"Come to prayer"
  • Hayya' alal Falaah"Come to felicity"
  • Hayya' alal Falaah"Come to felicity"
  • Allaahu Akbar(2x)"God is the greatest"
  • Laa ilaaha illa-Lah"
  • There is none worthy of worship except God"Say the Du'a after Adhan (below).

Extra Information

  • After a sentence is recited, the rest who are praying together (jama'ah) shall answer (recite softly) exactly what the mu'azzin recited. However, for numbers 7-10 above, the rest shall answer (recite softly)
  • La Hawla Wala Kuwata Ila Billah"There is no Power or Authority except Allah.
  • "For Fajr prayers there is a special addition. After number 9, the mu'azzin shall add:
    As-Salatu Khayrum-minan Nawm (2x)"Prayer is indeed better than sleep

Du'a

Allahumma Rabba Hathihi Al-Da'awati Al-Taamma Wal Salati Al-qaa’ima, Aati Sayyedana Muhammadan Al-Wasilata Wal-Fadilata Wal-Darajata Al-'aleyata Al RafĂ®‘a, Wa b‘ath-hu Allahumma Maqaman Mahmudan Allathi Wa‘adtahu, Innaka La Tokhlifu Al-Mee'ad.

"O Allah, Lord of this most perfect call, and of the Prayer that is about to be established, grant to Muhammad the favor of nearness (to You) and excellence and a place of distinction, and exalt him to a position of glory that You have promised him, you never break the promise."


Tips

Listen to various recitations of the Adhan before trying to say it on your own.Practice it a lot before you say it for prayer.The Adhan is normally called around 15 minutes before the Prayer. The Iqama is called just before the Prayer start

Warnings

The Fajr Adhan is only for the Fajr Prayer.
